Gameplay additions and changes

Pregame Menu

When loading a Free Enterprise ROM for the first time (or if there are no saved games), instead of the normal load game screen, you are presented with the pregame menu. This menu will show you:

  • Your starting character
  • Your flag string
  • The version of Free Enterprise used to generate the ROM
  • A 4-symbol code hash/checksum verification code, used to verify that this randomization matches that of another player's ROM. (This code is also viewable on the load/save game screen)

From this screen you may access the Custom menu to set your preferences before the game starts, as well as a pregame naming screen to set your characters' names in advance.

If a character's sprite does NOT appear beside their name on the pregame naming menu, that means that character has been specifically excluded from the seed with Cno flags. (Note that with Cmaybe enabled, even if their sprite is visible, they may not necessarily be findable in the seed.)

Enabling “name distinguishers” will uniquely modify the name of each character that joins your party; this is meant to help disambiguate duplicate characters in your party without requiring a Namingway visit, if desired.

Track Menu

The new “Track” submenu can be found in the normal menu screen. This menu contains:

  • A key item tracker that will show you which key items have been found/used, and where they were found. (Note that once you have found a key item, its location will remain visible in the track menu across all save slots, even if you load/switch to a save where you have not acquired the item.)
  • When playing with added objectives, a list of all objectives, highlighted to show which ones have been completed.

Custom Menu

The following items have been added to the normal game customization menu:

  • A toggle to enable/disable random encounters (when playing with toggleable encounters)
  • A toggle to disable in-game music.
  • * In-game SFX will still play.
  • * The randomized harp song will still play.
  • A toggle to disable quick flash/strobe visual effects for players with photosensitivity concerns.

Note that the music and flashing effects toggles are intended to be lag-invariant for competitive uses – that is, there should be no frame advantage gained from having the option enabled or disabled.
